Lumbago

pain in the muscles and joints of the lower back.

Causes

1. Spinal muscle spasms cause the back to feel stiff and sore
2. Back pain and muscle spasm can be so acute that posture is affected.
3. The patient may appear to be listing to one side.
4. Lumbago may cause tingling sensations to be felt in the low back, buttocks, and legs

Treatment

Acute low back pain. Use simple painkillers regularly. Your GP may also sometimes prescribe special medicines which relax the muscles of the back. Research shows that NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs eg ibuprofen) and muscle relaxants relieve pain better than placebo.
